On June 15, 2010 Moscow hosted a joint meeting of the Presidium of RAS and the delegation of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (USA). Academician A. Grigoriev spoke on “Prospects of RAS in the creation of innovative medicines and medical equipment”.

There is a constant contact with the U.S. National Institutes of Health, the American Academy of Sciences, major U.S. and European pharmaceutical businesses, the program of cooperation between the U.S. and Russia in the field of biomedical sciences are being developed now. On 25-26 April 2011 it was held a working meeting between RAS-NIH (http://www.fnih.org) in the framework of the Russian-American Scientific Forum for Biomedical Research, which was attended by leading scientists of the two countries in the field of biomedicine, as well as representatives of major pharmaceutical and biotech companies. According to the results of the meeting it was signed a Memorandum of cooperation between the Russian Academy of Sciences and the National Institute of Health, USA.

The next step in the development of cooperation between Russia and the United States was the holding of the Russian-American Forum for Biomedical Research in Moscow on 16-18 November 2011. The event was an important step towards the establishment of closer contacts and exchange of experience between Russian and American academia, government agencies, Russia and the United States.

Deputy Minister of Health and Social Development of the Russian Federation Veronika Skvortsova said at the Forum that the most important element in the process of modernization and innovative health care reforms are the development and implementation of biomedical technologies. International partnership provides the basis for a significant acceleration of the processes of modernization and innovation updates. Our objectives in the development of biotechnology correspond to the ones of foreign counterparts. Today the Russian Biomedicine, in need of new innovative developments, has to evolve rapidly, so we see in the face of the American side an extremely strong partner.

Academician A. Grigoryev, Vice-President of RAS, said that the history of Russian-American cooperation has more than one year, but it has acquired its current, official format quite recently. Between the Russian Academy of Sciences and the U.S. National Institutes of Health it was signed a memorandum of cooperation, which was a new step in the development and implementation of joint projects. We hope that within the framework of this partnership we will be able not only to learn from the experience of foreign colleagues in the field of biomedical research, but also to begin joint development in this area.

In 2012, there were two Russian-American working meetings:

The first meeting “Tuberculosis in patients with HIV infection: the new paradigm, diagnostics and drug discovery” was held on 28-29 June 2012. The meeting was organized under the auspices of the US-Russia Scientific Forum for Biomedical Research (www.sci-forum.ru), established in 2010 within the framework of the Russian-American bilateral presidential commission. The main purpose of the meeting was a discussion of research conducted in the United States and Russia in the field of co-infection of HIV-tuberculosis (TB-HIV), as well as expert evaluation of the possibility of cooperation in priority areas. The seminar brought together the leading scientists from Russia and the United States, specializing in HIV-tuberculosis, among them were representatives of the relevant ministries and the pharm business. The number of participants from the Russian was 30 people, including five academicians and corresponding members of RAS and RAMS. Following the meeting it was formed a permanent Russian-American Advisory council of representatives from RAS and RAMS, Ministry of Health of Russia and U.S. scientists active in this field, representatives of the NIH and other leading research organizations in the U.S. This Council is to participate in the selection and examination of joint projects in this area (see the brief results of this meeting here).

On September 7-18, 2012 Moscow hosted the Russian-American Working Meeting “Microbione of the human: metagenomics, new biomarkers of disease, translational research in personalized medicine”.

The meeting was organized under the auspices of the US-Russia Scientific Forum for Biomedical Research (www.sci-forum.ru), established in 2010 within the framework of the Russian-American bilateral presidential commission.

The seminar brought together the leading scientists from Russia and the United States, specializing in human microbiome research and medical applications of the results. The number of participants from the Russian was 50 people representing all relevant organizations of RAS, RAMS, Ministry of Health and Epidemiology of Russia, including 5 academicians and corresponding members of RAS and RAMS. To date, the study of human microbiome is a revolutionary new direction, integrating many areas of biomedical research and the pharmaceutical industry. As a result of joint discussion at the Round Table “Prospects of Russian-American human microbiome research” there have been developed and adopted the recommendations of the meeting” (see the brief results of this meeting here).
